HOTTENTOT is a new musical inspired by the life and legacy of Sarah Baartman, a young Khoisan woman taken from South Africa to Europe in the nineteenth century and exploited as a spectacle for public consumption.
Through an original score, storytelling, and theatrical expression, this compact (4 performers) musical reclaims Sarah’s narrative from the historical gaze that reduced her to her body. Beyond the violence of her exploitation, Hottentot explores the fullness of her humanity—her beauty, intellect, desire, spirit, and capacity for self-determination.
Moving between the 21st century, memory, history, and imagination, the work interrogates who possesses the authority to tell a story, define beauty, and claim a legacy. Both an act of remembrance and a demand for reckoning, Hottentot transforms historical erasure into reclamation and asks what vengeance might mean when history itself remains unresolved.
